Cumulative Trauma: When Work Causes Injury Over Time

Not every work injury happens in one accident. Repeated job duties and exposures can gradually cause or worsen a medical condition.

What is a cumulative trauma injury?

A cumulative trauma claim involves injury from repetitive activities or exposures over a period of time. California’s DWC recognizes that workers may be hurt through repeated motion or ongoing workplace exposure, not only through one sudden event.

Examples of work that may cause injury over time

  • Repeated lifting, pushing or pulling
  • Typing, gripping or tool use
  • Frequent bending, kneeling or overhead work
  • Prolonged standing or driving
  • Constant noise or vibration
  • Chemical, dust or other occupational exposure

Common cumulative trauma conditions

These claims may involve the hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, neck, back, knees, hearing, internal systems or psychological health. Medical diagnosis and a careful history of job duties are important.

Report symptoms when you connect them to work

Employees sometimes wait because there was no single accident. If you learn or believe work caused the condition, report it and request appropriate medical care. Describe the actual frequency, force and duration of the job duties accurately.

Prior conditions do not automatically end the analysis

A preexisting condition and a work-related injury can involve separate questions of causation and apportionment. The answer depends on medical evidence and the facts—not simply whether symptoms existed before.
